Choosing a Classic designer Handbags
post written by Bag Bliss blogger: Marissa
Why do some handbags have the title “classic?” Are they named “classic” once a slew of women run to the stores to get that one bag on everyone’s wish list for that particular season? Or maybe they are named “classic” when women want the same handbag over and over again especially when it comes out in different patterns? Or maybe the most logical definition for a “classic” handbag is a bag that is worn year after year by women, becomes iconic in the fashion world, and never goes out of style. Finding a classic handbag that will never go out of style is hard to find. It’s even harder when you are looking for that classic handbag that you will love forever and never get sick of. The best place to find an everlasting handbag is from a designer who has iconic handbags. Women always flock to the handbags that every girl wants, or that have been in style for years. Some of the designer brands that have classic handbags are Chanel, Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs, and YSL to name a few. Some people may not consider Marc Jacobs to be a classic handbag designer, but I beg to differ. When Marc Jacobs introduced the “Stam” handbag he provoked women across the globe to update their wish lists and dream about another gorgeous bag.Don’t forget “classic” designer handbags cost a pretty penny so when looking for that special handbag, be sure you are looking for something you absolutely love. Just because everyone else loves it, doesn’t mean you too are going to love it for years to come. Most handbag loving women, like myself, sometimes impulse shop. You convince yourself you love that one handbag, you buy it, and a month later you HATE it! I’m always on a handbag budget and I always find that it’s best to “think” about a bag. I look at the bag numerous times on the computer, check it out at the store tons of times, and even try it on a few times to see if I’m absolutely in love with. What is the point of spending hundreds maybe even thousands on a handbag if you won’t wear it much? After many hard shopping impulses I have learned my lesson. If you think it’s a “classic” bag you will love forever, do some testing before you purchase it!Some handbags that you never have to fear of being outdated are the: Chanel Classic Flap Bag; Chanel Large Shopping bag; Hermes Birkin; Louis Vuitton Alma; Louis Vuitton Speedy; and the YSL Large Tribute. This is a very tiny collection of some classic handbags in the fashion world, but there are much more out there. With a little research, and store visiting you too can find your favorite classic handbag to purchase. Here are some of the bags, I listed above, that I consider classic:
Pictured Above: Hermes Birkin
There isn’t much to say about the Hermes Birkin, it pretty much speaks for itself. It’s gorgeous, and oh so classic. It’s very hard to get one, even if you are on a waiting list. Be careful though, there are many fakes out there! Gorgeous, and breathtaking.. what more is there to say.
Pictured Above: Marc Jacobs Patchwork Stam
Some people may not think Marc Jacobs can have the privilege of listing a bag as “classic” yet, but I disagree on all counts. No he hasn’t been around a ton of years, but he created one of the most memorable handbags that will be remembered for a long time to come. That handbag is the Stam. He brought out the: Quilted Stam; the Quilted Little Stam; and my favorite the Patchwork Stam (pictured above). He also has some beautiful Stam like bags coming out this fall. The Stam bag is gorgeous, spacious, and unique. What more could you want in a bag?
Pictured Above: Louis Vuitton Speedy 30
No one can deny that the Speedy by Louis Vuitton is a “classic” handbag. Audrey Hepburn made the Speedy (25) happen after it was made for her and ever since then it has been one of Louis Vuitton’s most popular handbags. The Speedy comes in many Louis Vuitton styles including Epi, Monogram Mini Lin, Monogram Multicolor, Damier Azur/Ebony, etc. The Speedy is definitely one of my favorite handbags, and it’s a handbag that will be around for years to come.

Yves Saint Laurent Woven Maia Satchel
It’s no newbie, but I can’t help but love its overall design. I adore its structured silhouette and how its dark accents compliment finely to its neutral body. Ok maybe this bag isn’t exactly the best find for the coming season, but if you reside in an area where it scorchers year-round, such as I do, this YSL would make a great companion.

Marc by Marc Jacobs Staples & Studs Large Satchel
Marc by Marc Jacobs Staples & Studs Large Satchel
Isn’t this interesting to put staples on a handbag!?Introducing the Marc by Marc Jacobs Staples & Studs Large Satchel. It is Marc’s lasted interpretation of the punk-chic look.Well, this bag is cool with black leather bag features stud detail along the top and sides and a huge tassel zipper pull. And no, that isn’t a zipper running down the front of the handbag. That is actually a row of staples that is straddling the center seam. Personally, I would never carry this bag. At best, it offers a look that one might call “unique”. But I just can’t get past those staples. The studs? Sure. But staples? What happened Marc?

Gucci “Hearts” New York but sadly, it is an unrequited love. We first covered the happy story of this partnership last week. But since then, New York City’s Empire State Development Corporation (ESDC), who owns the trademark to I “heart symbol” New York, became a little ticked that PPR (who owns Gucci) did not get permission to use this logo. Uh, did they also hear that all the proceeds from this bag is going back to New York to the Playground Partners Central Park Improvement Program? What is the issue here really? It sounds to me like ego because not only is there no harm, this only benefits the city with cash and PR. And what sane person would fight to turn away cash and PR? This makes no sense. So, to be charitable, we first have to consult with our legal team? I mean, sure Gucci gets something out of this, they want to promote their new giant flagship store on 5th Ave but hello, doesn’t that also benefit the city of New York? Decisively marking it as the fashion capital and the most important market for Gucci? Margaret Brennan of CNBC is covering the ongoing saga.

I found myself with several hours of free time on my hands yesterday morning, and decided to go watch Sex and the City. I loved the series and was afraid I would hate the movie but it was as if the show never ended, the girls slipped back into their roles without missing a beat! I don’t want to give too much away for those of you who have not seen it but the movie was a sweetly spun tale about love, friendship, and forgiveness. But please do not expect any earth shattering performances, the cast, after all, is merely prop for all the fabulous gowns, shoes and bags! Now, on to the bags, there were so much eye candy for me in each scene, many that we’ve featured here in the past:
Carrie by far had the best bags (with the exception of the Eiffel tower clutch in the opening scene from Timmy Woods). From Hermes, LV, Chanel to glittering clutches I couldn’t identify (yet!), she did not disappoint!Charlotte unsurprisingly played it safe with totes, from Chanel to the Biern Jenna you guys went nuts over, with a pop of color from a ruched satin Prada clutch and a Valentino satchel in red with roses across the top. She did have one crazy bag, the Fendi furry mess.Samantha was her usual colorful self. Big bold Chanel bags, the Jimmy Choo Face bag and several brightly colored totes including a Nancy Gonzalez lovely.Miranda had a nice selection of diverse bags. I loved the Nancy Gonzalez croc and python bag she carried, the Alexandra McQueen’s metallic elvie was yummy, the Escada Margaretha bag and a strange looking fish bag made of wicker.

Carrie had several Chanel bags on her arm throughout the movie. The classic flap bag (which she wore long with one single chain a la 1985) and the tote with patches. This is the one she carried to Fashion Week with the girls. Not my favorite but it was flashy and appropriate for the occasion.
In the opening scene, Carrie is carrying a crystal Eiffel tower clutch by Beverly Hills bag designer Timmy Woods. She is supposedly showing her love of Paris but whatever– the bag is costumey and kitschy, definitely not my cup of tea– and the price is beyond ridiculous! She was wearing fabulous Dior gladiator platform shoes, though.
Nancy Gonzalez python and croc bag- This is one of my absolute favorite bags from the movie. At the risk of sounding like a fashion victim, I really want it! Miranda (not my favorite character) had it swinging from her arm in one of the group scenes and it is a scene stealer!
A lexander McQueen’s Elvie bag in metallic was toted by Miranda in one of the earlier scenes. I love the elvie and it was great to see a bag that is not on everyone’s radar in the movie.
Samantha’s Nancy Gonzalez bag was featured by Kelly last month. We adore the top zip satchel and ordered ours in all croco, mine is the smaller size. At Bergdorf Goodman. You can also order the matching croc and studded dog collar and leash! Gold studs were a major theme in the movie, bringing on more 80’s flashback!
The Escada Margaretha bag is not the norm for Miranda, she’s usually in structured business looking bags so this was a nice change for her. Our intern, Anne, was enamored with this bag months ago before she knew it was on SATC, our young and hip intern is so ahead of trends!
Co-star Jennifer Hudson was a fresh addition to the cast as Carrie’s assistant, Louise. She sported the Denim patchwork (rented from BBAS), a fringe-y Chanel, and the Motard Firebird which Carrie splurged on after Louise helped put her life back together.
Thank you to all the PR reps who supplied us with the fabulous photos.

I love Derek Lam’s dresses and flowing tops.!It feels like a doll when you wear them! He is one of my absolute favorite young designers. I am lusting for this floaty cloud of a silk dress above; it just looks so delightful and romantic. It also looks extremely lightweight and probably feels like you have nothing on! I’d wear this with a clutch, so I can leave my shoulders bare and free of burdensome straps, like the shimmering Bottega beauty. The contrast of heavy metal boxiness and the soft and flowing dress is amazing!
